Expiring Playground:
If no activity in playground its span is 6 months and if you keep using/working on it then it will not expire.
Click on your avatar (Profile pic) | Choose 'Hands-on Orgs' from the dropdown | You will be able to see the playgrounds expiring (may be search for the keyword expiring) | Just launch that playground (to stop that playground from expiring)
Creating Playground:
A Trailhead Playground is an org you can use to complete hands on challenges and try out new features and customizations
Click on your avatar (Profile pic) | Choose 'Hands-on Orgs' from the dropdown | You will be able to see the option to Create a playground.
